The fast track to education for busy executives

People come to executive offices and management positions through an infinite variety of career paths. And sometimes, college isn’t on the path.

But what do you do if the lack of a college degree suddenly becomes a liability? It might not happen in your current position. On the other hand, what about the next step in your career?

If faced with two otherwise identical resumes from two otherwise identical candidates, which person would a hiring manager choose – the candidate with a college degree, or the candidate without one?

There was a time when, I’m fairly certain, it wouldn’t have mattered to the hiring manager. And in some cases and industries, I’d even bet that packing a degree might be seen as a liability. But those days are long gone.

So if you’re going to get a degree, and you’re an executive or manager, you’ll likely want to get your degree as easily and flexibly as possible. I say, get a jump on the situation by taking the CLEP exam.

CLEP is an acronym for College Level Examination Program. A U.S. federal program of long standing, CLEP provides college students with the chance, no matter what their age, to demonstrate that they’ve achieved training and skills at a college level. This demonstration is accomplished through a federal program of exams in college courses at the undergraduate level. Nearly 3,000 colleges grant course credit or advanced standing based on the results of CLEP testing.

And talk about return on investment – for just $65, you could be saving yourself tens of thousands of dollars in tuition costs that your current company may not cover as a job benefit. (Though it’d be nice if they did, wouldn’t it?)

Once you’ve taken the exam and gotten your credits, then you can dive into the flexible school options, from correspondence to online education, night courses to weekend courses. So give your local college’s career office a call, and see what the CLEP can do for you.
