Resumes and job searches: not re-inventing the wheel

A client of mine (not in the professional resume writing industry) has been asking for marketing material recently that, well, isn’t exactly what you’d call “unique.”

In fact, I’ve been asked to take material from a competitor and just rewrite it within my client’s voice and style, since they’re selling similar items.

Now, this raises a number of interesting issues related to branding, marketing, content, and even copyright, but it also inspired a line of thinking in the resume and job search world.

Here are the relevant questions:

1. Who do you know who just landed a plum executive position recently?

2. What did they do to land that job?

Using the idea of “form, not formula,” I’m hoping you know someone who you can sit down with over dinner (and a couple of drinks afterwards), and grill them on every aspect of how their job search went down.

When you go over the results, I expect the seeds of a job search plan are going to appear, including the answers to questions like:

How wide a net did they cast with their resumes?

How much customization did they do for resumes and cover letters?

How much networking did they do, and was it a factor?

Did they do anything with industry or trade groups? How did that help?

What kind of interview or interviews did they face?

What references (if any) were necessary, and how did the references factor in (if at all)?

What, ultimately, were the biggest selling points that elicited the “You’re hired!” response from the hiring manager?

You know, a lot of this is kind of standard when it comes to job searching – networking, customizing resumes and cover letters, preparing in advance for interviews, and so forth. But what I’ve learned over the years is that some people learn in different ways.

So I can share what I’ve learned here on the blog, but for some people, it only hits home when they hear it from someone they know personally. And this is one way you can do just that.
