Getting a LinkedIn tuneup, and other social networking options
At this point, I think the jury’s safely in on LinkedIn, and it’s a big “Yes, you’ve gotta be there.”
But if you’re on there already, is it doing you any good?
And if you’re not, how do you get on there in a way that’s useful to you, and not a total and complete time-waster? (Good to know for current users, too.)
One resource I like is this article by the folks at Go-To-Market Strategies. Yes, they’re sales and marketing focused, but don’t let that stop you from enjoying some good, concise advice, including four powerful ways to use LinkedIn to your advantage.
From there, you can also download a free checklist to evaluate your use of LinkedIn, or to get you started down the right path if you’re just now dipping your toe in the water, so to speak.
LinkedIn is just one business-related networking site (call it a “social network service,” in that it’s a “community of people who share interests and activities or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others” – thanks, Wikipedia). There are more out there, and I wouldn’t be surprised if you chose to ignore them all, simply because it was too overwhelming to figure out where to start, and/or it seemed like a pain in the you-know-what to spend all that time setting up profile after profile.
Personally, I went with a virtual assistant service to set up my profiles on a number of social networking sites, and it was one of the better decisions I’ve made this year. Business Services, Etc. can get you up and running in short order – you fill out one form with them, and they take your info and do all the set up for you.
So whether you’re new to the online networking game, or need to brush up a bit, here’s hoping one or more of the above resources come in handy!
