Executive interviews – what your body’s saying for you

You’ve probably gone through several interviews in the past. You’ve probably conducted job interviews several times over. This is fantastic experience, but if your thinking about making a change in your executive career, it’s worth your time to review some interview do’s and dont’s.

This is your future career we’re talking about, after all, and there maybe hundreds of you vying for this job – all of them brushing up on their interviewing skills as well.

Let’s talk a little bit about body language. During interviews, you must remember that you are being observed. Not just passively watched, but actively observed. Even before you utter a word, your body is already telling the interviewers something. Here are three examples of what you’re saying with your body in your executive interview:

Maintain sufficient eye contract with the interviewer – and by sufficient, that also means not too much, as this Harvard Business School article reveals. The moment you avoid eye contact when answering a question, the interviewer gets suspicious. Worst, if you stare down the interviewer, he or she could interpret this as a form of flirtation.

When answering questions, don’t fidget. This marks you as nervous and potentially unprepared. This, and six other tips for minding your body manners, are right here for you.

Maintain good posture and avoid “close body language” such as crossing your arms in front of you. How much you show your torso is an indicator of how confident, secure, and trusting you are in a situation. You’ll find more information in this article.

Finally, think back to interviews that went well. You may recall what you said, but can you recall what you did with your body? If not, then take notes as you go through the executive interview process this time around, and start raising your game.
