Can you actually have fun on the executive job search hunt?

No one ever said job hunting itself was fun. All the work of writing resumes, going on interviews, keeping on top of the follow up, networking effectively, getting rejected in person, or via email, or through a simple and profound silence – not exactly playtime activities.

I’ve been talking with my son a lot recently about deciding to feel happy, and to find the fun in everything you do. (My wife’s an expert at it. My son and I? We’re getting better at it.) So it made sense to look at the career change angle, too, if only for the challenge of it.

So, after a few moments of brainstorming, here are three ways to inject some smiles into the whole executive job search routine:

  1. Turn it into a game. Are you a competitive type? Set goals for yourself, and decide on rewards for achieving them. Send out a certain number of resumes every week, land X number of interviews, attend a networking event – list your challenges, then start every day looking at what you need to do to earn your prize.
  2. Get a friend involved. Know someone else looking for a new position? Extend your challenge to them – or just commiserate. Get together over a beer or two and share your war stories. Role play with each other for interviews, meet after actual interviews for debriefs over coffee or beer. Share the ride with someone who understands.
  3. Get away from the hunt. All work and no play doesn’t make you a dull boy or girl in the sense of being boring – it dulls your senses, your thinking, your ability to come up with new and creative ideas. I’ve written about this in terms of work-life balance before, but the lesson applies here as well. A joyful boost in one area of your life carries over into other areas, too.

Done reading? Great! Now go do something fun. If you haven’t earned it today yet, I’ll bet you’ve been racking up fun credits for weeks now, so step away from the computer and go play!
