Adding another ball to the work/life juggling act

I’ve been thinking a bit about the whole “getting an advanced degree to advance your career” thing recently. It’s what I did when I was in management and wanted to improve my prospects ten years ago.

(My goodness, how time flies!)

And with the start of the New Year, traditionally time for self-improvement resolutions, you might be thinking of going back to school to increase your chances of a promotion, a bigger paycheck, or both.

With an advanced degree, that could happen …

  • Within your own company
  • In another company in your industry, or
  • In another industry entirely

So when I came across this article from MonsterLearning.com about balancing work, school, and life, I got a bit nostalgic for those heady days, when I was in sales management, going to MBA school two nights a week, and dating the gal I eventually married.

MonsterLearning offers nine tips in that article, but I’ll tell you, the hands-down most valuable one is staying organized:

“Make daily and weekly to-do lists, but don’t panic if unexpected problems arise and set you back. Keep work and school separate, even if your employer supports your efforts.”

That’s the foundational tip that supports these other highly important areas of your life:

  • Still having time for your family
  • Getting enough sleep and exercise
  • Finding time for yourself to rest and recharge

And there’s a big difference between those last two. Your brain needs the sleep, but your brain needs the rest, too. If your brain is churning 18 hours a day, first on work, then on class, then on homework, then on managing the regular duties of the home front, you’re going to burn out fast.

Whether you’re actively seeking an advanced degree to boost your executive job prospects, or just on the sidelines thinking about it, prepare to take your organization and time management skills to the next level, too. It’s a skill that’ll serve you in every other area of your life as well.
