A networking reminder for your (eventual) executive job search

I’m sharing this little tidbit because I can always use the occasional reminder, and I bet many of you can, too. Even if you aren’t thinking about switching jobs right now, aren’t writing and re-writing your resume, are perfectly happy with your executive position, there’s great value to be had in building and freshening your business network.

It’s not just about being a social butterfly. Though having good social skills always comes in handy, especially when you’re networking. Of course, don’t make friends with someone simply because you think he or she will be useful to you one day. Imagine how you’d feel if the tables were turned.

But it is true – your social circle or your network of friends can be very helpful in a career switch. We all know employers are more likely to be comfortable about hiring people they know and like, or who come recommended by someone they know and like, than someone coming completely out of the blue.

So look around for that next industry gathering – whether it’s all business or not – and get there. Even if you have no plans of switching jobs in the near future, make the contacts. See who you can help, instead of the other way around. Your good will comes back to you eventually.

Work around the room and meet people. Don’t stick with the people you already know. Just go over to your friends and say hello, and then move on to meet others. And don’t stand in the corner like a wallflower, either. That’s the worst situation of all, because then you’re helping no one – not even yourself.
